the sea

As the pioneer of marine beauty—Thalgo exists to deliver truly innovative skincare products, supplements and protocols to revitalise your body, mind and beauty.

For centuries, the sea has been a source of vital energy and transformation for humans—able to regenerate us on a cellular level—and for more than 50 years, Thalgo has been inspired by the endless diversity of the ocean. We have discovered the pure, unadulterated marine energy that lies within its depths where marine extracts concentrate active ingredients, minerals and trace elements—up to 10,000 times more than terrestrial plants—boosting their potency and biochemistry.

Given their biomimicry, these marine molecules also have a close bio-affinity with the skin and are able to be well-assimilated by the body. As sea water itself contains 92 minerals and trace elements that are essential for our body—and possesses negative ion levels that are up to 1600 times higher than in the city—this abundance of minerals can be utilised to regenerate, rejuvenate and revitalise.

We understand and respect the sea as the origin of life and the source of our wellbeing—so we are dedicated to combining our pharmaceutical expertise and our Mediterranean roots to infuse this marine energy into our products and protocols. By doing so, we deliver a holistic experience that is as efficacious as it is luxurious.

For centuries, the sea has been a source of vital energy and transformation for humans—able to regenerate us on a cellular level—and for more than 50 years, Thalgo has been inspired by the endless diversity of the ocean.

Inspired by the regenerative power of the sea, visionary pharmacist, André Bouclet, established Thalgo in 1964 as the world’s first laboratory specialising in skincare products to utilise the bioavailable benefits of algae and marine extracts. Derived from a combination of “Thalassotherapy” and “Algae”, Thalgo's formulations were initially intended for the medical world and thalassotherapy centres.

In 1966, however, Bouclet developed a unique algae micronisation process that ruptured the algae’s delicate cell wall—whilst preserving the potency and integrity of its contents. This new method allowed Bouclet to capture and utilise the highly active marine ingredients without degrading them.

That same year, Bouclet filed a medical patent for the combination of three micronised algae that he chose for their wealth of bioactive and bioavailable ingredients: Laminaria Digitata, Fucus Vesiculosus and Lithothamnium calcareum. This Micronised Marine Algae (M.M.A.) contained 18 amino acids, 22 trace elements, sugars, polyphenols and nourishing fatty acids that were easily assimilated by the skin and subsequently prescribed to deliver therapeutic benefits for skin, rheumatic and circulatory disorders.

In 1976, Thalgo found its home on the French Riviera after being inspired by its gentle lifestyle, energising light and colours. While each of Thalgo's galenic forms are intended to evoke the sensory pleasures of the sea, the fragrances—developed in Grasse—perfectly capture the freshness and luminosity of the sun-kissed ocean.

By 1999, Thalgo experienced renewed direction once again when Jean-Claude Sirop, a visionary engineer, acquired the company. The family business wouldwoud be revitalised under his influence and in 2004, his son, Bernard Sirop, took the helm.

As a duo, they inspired the idea that performance should lie at the heart of the brand’s values. Within the space of just a few years, Thalgo evolved to become a world leader in professional Marine Cosmetics—combining efficacy and wellbeing to expand what’s possible in beauty.

Today, Thalgo is stocked and utilised by over 12,000 professionals in Salons, Spas and Thalasootherapy Centres globally—and is renowned for its Marine Expertise and innovation.
