What Is Silicium?
And why this trace element is key to skin health…
As we age, it’s natural for our skin to slowly lose the lovely plumpness of our youth. By the time we reach our 40s, in fact, most of us have experienced loss of firmness and less well-defined facial contours. The signs of fatigue can also be more pronounced.
While collagen and elastin—the proteins that keep our skin firm, elastic and plump—naturally decline as we age, so too do our stores of hyaluronic acid and the element Silicium. More commonly known as ‘Silicon’ on the periodic table—and not to be confused with silicone—Silicium plays an important role in collagen synthesis and maintaining the skin’s strength and elasticity. It is also associated with supporting the structural integrity of our hair and nails, as well as bone mineral density.
Unfortunately, however, there has been a surprising lack of research in terms of this critical element.
At Thalgo, our Research and Development team have long been interested in the effects and benefits of Silicium—even conducting a study in conjunction with the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis (now the University of Côte d'Azur). This pioneering study set out to understand the effectiveness of Silicium on the rejuvenation of fibroblast morphology and the optimisation of their communication with the extracellular matrix and proved that Silicium actually restimulates the neo-synthesis of Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)—compounds which are responsible for drawing water into the skin to maintain hydration—hyaluronic acid, elastin and both type I and type IV collagen.
Utilising this knowledge, Thalgo created a new Algae Complex rich in marine silicium and Vitamin C - Silicium Lift.
Specifically formulated to combat the visible signs of ageing including more pronounced wrinkles and loss of skin firmness, the complete Silicium Lift regimen—including the day cream or rich day cream, night cream, serum and eye cream—delivers remarkable rejuvenation properties. The hero formula is undoubtedly the Silicium Lift Intensive Lifting & Firming Serum.
In fact, independent studies featuring 23 volunteers over 28 days of use reported the following:
95%: Firmer, more toned skin, as if lifted after just 14 days*
95%: Fresher complexion after just 14 days*
Face Fitness consists in working the facial muscles, just like we develop the muscles in certain
areas of the body. Almost 20 years ago, Thalgo – the Face Fitness pioneer – created the Energilift massage in collaboration with a plastic surgeon. This exclusive sculpting massage works the muscles of the face and neck deep down, one by one. Like a manual facelift, this professional technique naturally
resculpts the face.
Inspired by the principles of face fitness, Thalgo has developed an at home massage roller developed to optimise the firming and lifting effectiveness of the Silicium Lift skincare range. Its exclusive ergonomic design allows mechanical stimulation of skin’s different structures, on a dermal, muscular and vascular level.
The Face Fitness Roller performs a gentle musculo-dermal kneading and rolling massage by
mechanical kneading, guided by the two mobile heads, imitating the effect of a professional
massage. Daily use results in firmer, toned skin and a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
While ageing is inevitable, a consistent daily skincare routine using formulas specifically targeted to treat the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to skin ageing can yield impressive results.
