Thalassotherapy

It is from the word Thalassa in Greek, meaning the sea and it is the term coined in the 19th Century to describe the many uses and curative effects of sea water and substances derived from the sea, such as seaweed, marine mud, sand and sea-spray.
Thalassotherapy is based on the principle of treating the body with seawater, either as a cure or a preventive measure. A Thalassotherapy Centre is located by the coast, under direct influence of the sea air. They use freshly drawn sea water, directly pumped into the centre. They must also have one or more doctors practicing permanently within the centre. They are equipped with the following;

  • Hydrotherapy baths
  • Underwater massage turbo baths
  • Jet massage showers
  • Massage & equipment based physiotherapy
  • Electrotherapy (ionisation, laser & ultrasound)
  • UV sunlamps
  • Anti-smoking cures
  • Gym equipment
  • Sauna, steam and jacuzzi
  • Beauty therapy and chiropody
  • Relaxation
  • Dietary care
  • Herbal tearoom and shop
  • Swimming Pools with underwater jets Conditions treated

    How does sea water work?

    The sea is so rich in minerals and it is living due to the presence of micro-organisms. Sea water cannot be kept any longer than 24hrs. It is therefore impossible to have a Thalassotherapy Centre anywhere but the coast. Sea water that has been recently pumped from the sea and reheated to 34-36°C permits the passage of ions into the body. Plus the fact that the density of the sea water and human cells are similar, means the effects of treatments is far quicker and more profound. Sea water is very close to our own blood plasma.
